Note to Chicago City Government Officials: criminals don’t obey laws.  Gun makers are not flooding your city with firearms for the criminal market.  More reasonable gun laws elsewhere are not the reason that you have a problem. 

If Britain had the criminal elements and gang bangers that you have, Britain would have a worse situation with violence than they do now, after they passed their handgun ban and began collecting sharp-pointed kitchen knives.  If gun control worked, both Chicago and Britain would be much safer than they are.

If Japan had Chicago’s gangsters, the Japanese would have a higher crime rate.  Please read David Kopel’s book, The Samurai, the Mountie and the Cowboy, Should America Adopt the Gun Controls of Other Democracies?  Prometheus Books, Buffalo, New York, 1992, pages 431 and 432.  Consider Mr. Kopel’s conclusion that social controls and not gun control are the reasons for lower crime rates in these two island nations on opposite sides of the globe.

Baseball bats!  That’s it!  Baseball bats!  A baseball bat murderer in Boulder Colorado was just sent to prison on DNA evidence.  Maybe if you ban baseball bats, that will solve the Chicago violence problem.

You never know, bats might the answer.  If we could only get them out of some of the Chicago belfreys…

On Page One, “Obama takes aim at flow of arms to Mexico,” the Post quoted Mexican President Calderon as saying that, “90% of the weapons seized in Mexico can be traced to the United States.”  You would think that somebody, the President of Mexico, someone on the Associated Press staff, or someone at The Denver Post would have watched the Fox News story that blew the “90%” canard out of the water.  (See my post: “Left overstates US gun impact on Mexican Violence,” tagged: “Mexican gun violence,” done on 04-07-09.)

In actuality, about 17% of the crime guns seized in Mexico came from the US market.  By allowing this “90%” misinformation to stand without comment, both the AP and the Post seemed to demonstrate either ignorance or bias.

On Page 12 B, The Denver Post printed an editorial from the anti-gun rights Washington Post.  In this piece, the writers opined that the Interior Department should reject the Bush Administration rule allowing concealed carry permit holders to carry in national parks in states that honor their permits.  The editorial mischaracterized the rule by saying that the regulation allows “visitors” to carry concealed, loaded guns.  In reality, all CCW permit holders in parks would be visitors, but not all park visitors would be CCW permit holders.

The uninformed reader would naturally believe from this piece that all visitors could legally carry concealed.  The writers go on to emote a “parade of horribles,” including increased poaching, accidental shootings of wildlife and park visitors, and apparently (Gasp!) lead pollution from the tons of bullets that would presumably be sprayed around the parks by red-necked, racist, sexist, one-toothed, beer-swilling, gun-toting barbarians.  (See my posts on the parks under the Category: “Concealed Carry.)

(According to a more recent post on the Volokh Conspiracy, the Washington Post got its wish.  The Obama Administration has apparently decided not to appeal the liberal judge’s injunction against the Bush rule.  The Department of the Interior will reportedly keep the matter under study, but I think that we can conclude that concealed carry in national parks is a dead issue, at least until after the next presidential election.)

The Washington Post editorial reflected its usual animus toward armed self-defense against crime.  The Denver Post, by publishing this piece without comment, either exposed its own indifference to the details of the situation or a tacit agreement with the misinformation contained in the editorial.

David Sirota, in his op-ed piece, “Columbine questions we didn’t ask,” blamed spree killings on our warlike, violent society, that, according to him, has a “winner take all economy,” and “The killing machine…” of our “defense and security” establishments.  Michael Moore said essentially the same thing in his distorted “mocumentary,” Bowling for Columbine. (See David Kopel’s excellent deconstruction of Bowling…here.)

Sirota wasn’t shy about his own bias.  ”…the assault weapons ban expiration is an abomination.”  Never mind the fact that the Centers for Disease Control and the National Academy of the Sciences could find no significant crime prevention benefit from the ban or other gun control laws. (See my posts under the Category: “Research.”)

At least, Sirota rejected the simplistic notion that guns cause crime, although he didn’t bother to explain his animus against semi-automatic firearms, which he misnames, “assault weapons.”  It would be interesting to see his rationale for this dislike of these common guns, which many liberals seem to view as a necessary article of their faith.

Sirota’s opinion that the American defense establishment, journalists who support the military, and “every other suit-and-tie clad industry,” (whoever they are) promote the idea that “…killing is a legitimate form of national ambition and self-expression,” seems to be a bit over the top for my taste.  (See my politically incorrect posts under the Category: “War on Terror.”)

In conclusion, Friday’s Denver post was rife with sentiment against guns and gun owners, without so much as a single, mewling letter to the editor expressing the other side of the argument.  It’s no wonder that people who only get their “news” and opinions from Mainstream Media outlets are misinformed about the costs and benefits of firearms to society.  (See my Category: “Benefits of Guns.”)

I would argue that the same concept applies to women and students of all ages.  If more Americans do not get a balanced view of the world from the New Media, (Internet, Talk Radio, and Cable News) I believe that we are headed for a new Dark Age of ignorance and savagery.  The ancient Romans thought that they had grown beyond the reach of history and that their republic would last forever.  (Remember!  Rome is the “Eternal City.”)  Many Americans believe that we have grown beyond the reach of history…

The CBS hit piece on Americans’ right to self-defense from crime, tyranny and genocide apparently followed an NBC attack on 04-10-09.  We can expect an increasingly shrill crescendo of anti-Second Amendment rhetoric until at least after the anniversary of the Columbine killings.  There may be anti-NRA demonstrations at the Phoenix convention in May.

Why do I say that the CBS piece was biased?  Let’s look first at the timing of the piece to fit in with the annual, anti-gun rights, spring barrage.  The annual Columbine mourning and the upcoming annual NRA Convention provide ample targets for this sort of propaganda.

Next, let’s look at the structure of the segment.  It was a typical “advocacy journalism” set up.  The story opened with the implication that guns cause mass murders and that people buying guns is not a good thing.  The producers bring on a “straw man,” in this case the head of a Virginia gun rights organization.  Then, the presentation closes with a sound bite from anti-gun California Senator, Diane Feinstein, intimately associated with the first ban on semi-automatic firearms during the Clinton Administration.

You will notice that the pro gun-control side of the argument got the first and last slots in the segment.  It was designed this way, so viewers will tend to remember the anti-gun message.  The pro-gun rights “straw man” was “rebutted” by the closing arguments.

The “straw man” did mention that just one legally-armed student might have aborted the Virginia Tech Killings, which occurred in a “gun free criminal safe free fire zone.”  However, that statement was effectively drowned in the much more extensive coverage given to the anti-gun side of the argument.

Keep in mind that the producers controlled every minute aspect of this “news” report.  They just “happened,” to photograph some Nazi swastika flags at the gun show during the interview with the “straw man.”  These flags are normally displayed in conjunction with displays offering collections of war trophy Nazi memorabilia.  The casual observer of the “news” story probably wouldn’t know this, nor even consciously be aware that he or she was being led to associate the flags with the “straw man.”  Get it!  “Gun shows and gun rights are tied to Nazism!”  Excellent job of unconscious psychological persuasion!  Pavlov, not to mention Lenin, would be proud.

Let’s look at the advocates for the various sides in this “news” story.  There was one pro-individual rights advocate interviewed.  There were five pro-gun control viewpoints presented, including interviews with a wounded Virginia Tech student, the relative of a person killed in the Virginia Tech Massacre, an anti-gun law enforcement representative, and Diane Feinstein.  Illinois anti-gun Senator Dick Durbin got in his two cents for “sensible gun laws” in a sound bite.  Five to one aren’t bad odds  in a “news” story?

You will note that there were no persons interviewed or quoted who had employed firearms for self-defense, even though Dr. Gary Kleck estimates that up to 2.5 million defensive uses of guns occur every year.  You wouldn’t know it from this report.

Language is also telling.  The report misidentified semi-automatic, or self-loading firearms, as “assault weapons.”  ”Assaults” are bad things, right?  By pejorative labeling of commonly owned guns, the producers can shape the perceptions of viewers in the desired direction.

Real “assault weapons” are capable of fully automatic fire.  The guns shown in the news story are not.  You have to pull the trigger every time to fire a round from a self-loading firearm.  With a full-auto weapon, you pull the trigger and the gun will fire multiple rounds.  Advocates for more gun control typically deliberately blur this distinction.

In the segment, advocates for individual rights were called “The Gun Lobby,” which has a “stranglehold” on Congress.  Private sales of firearms at gun shows without background checks are referred to as “The Gun Show Loophole.”  (Ooh! Doesn’t that make you want to close that pesky “loophole,” register all gun sales, and force those nasty “gun lobby stranglers” back under the rocks from which they crawled?)

Never fear!  Even though the police are currently “outgunned” by drug dealers and gang bangers armed with their “gun of choice,” the “assault weapon,” Diane Feinstein will pick the time and place to push her gun control legislation and save us all from ourselves.

It’s extremely interesting to me that criminals and gangs didn’t seem to have a lot of interest in semi-automatic rifles, until the news media began hyping the idea that self-loading firearms were “guns of choice.”  I suppose the media had to point out to the gangsters what guns they should be using.

According to the CBS report, a recent poll indicated that “only” 49% of Americans currently favor stricter gun control laws.  After a few weeks of this kind of “news” reporting, the numbers will probably rise.

Now, I don’t object to the fact that CBS and “60 Minutes” producers have opinions on the issue of gun control.  I would just like them to express their opinions as opinions, and stop calling them “news.”  I would also like Mainstream Media pundits to clean up their language on the debate and stop trying to shape public opinion against gun owners.  Silly me!  That’s what advocacy journalism does! They have to make the world a ” better place”, a place like Chicago, or Oakland.  (See my posts under the Category: “Gun Law Failures.”)

The murders of police officers in California and Pennsylvania and the New York immigration center killings have provided a bloody backdrop for House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s call for gun registration.  The Second Amendment Foundation issued an alert on her April 7th pronouncement.

The Democrats just happen to have a bill in Congress that registers semi-automatics (”assault weapons”), handguns, and the people who own them.  HR 45 is the dream bill for the Brady Campaign, the Violence Policy Center, and all the other organizations that call for the disarmament/dis-empowerment of the American People.  (See my post: “House Bill 45, the anti-gun rights campaign begins in earnest,” 01-19-09, under the Category: “Culture War.”

If you haven’t read The Shadow Party by Horowitz and Poe and you own a gun or love the Constitution and freedom, you are like a blind cow being led down the chute at a slaughterhouse.  The above posts contain links to relevant web pages that I believe assemble the puzzle regarding the rush to Socialism by the Obama Administration.

Contact your senators, representative, Ms. Pelosi, and Mr. Reid and politely let them know your feelings about gun registration.  They are nervous about the political consequences of gun bans.  They need to be as nervous about registration, which is a necessary first step to the confiscation of privately held firearms in America.  (If you don’t believe it, check out what happened in England, Australia, New York, New Jersey, Louisiana, and California.)

If you don’t belong to and support  pro-individual rights organizations like the NRA and the Firearms Coalition of Colorado, get on board, now!  This may be your last chance to make a difference!  (See my Category: “Order of Battle.”)

This is not a drill!  This is the real thing.  Either respond now, or get ready to register and eventually give up your guns, or become a criminal subject to fines and imprisonment.  These people are serious!

Secretary of State-Clinton-Her husband’s administration passed the first national semi-automatic firearms ban in the early 1990’s.

Attorney General Holder-former lieutenant of Janet Reno of the Ruby Ridge, Waco, Elian Gonzalez, and Oklahoma City Bombing controversies.  Holder recently called for a renewal of the Clinton semi-auto ban.

Chief of Staff-Emanuel-Worked on the Brady Bill and supported an amicus brief  in the Heller Case to the effect that the Second Amendment does not recognize an individual right. 

Secretary of Education-Duncan-Anti-gun Superintendent of Chicago’s Public School System.  “This is a public health epidemic.  We are struggling to find the cure…we know the cure…getting rid of guns.”  (Chicago Tribune, Oct 14th, 2008, reported in NRA’s America’s First Freedom, April 2009, Page 34.)

Health and Human Services-Sebelius-Anti-gun Governor of Kansas, who vetoed concealed carry legislation on two occasions.

Drug Czar-Kerlikowske-Seattle Chief of Police, who supported ending private sales at gun shows and banning semi-automatic firearms.

Back door attacks on the Second Amendment:

It has been confirmed by numerous sources that the Obama Department of Defense directive that mandated the mutilation of all surplus military brass (fired cartridge cases) was real!  As mentioned in my post, “Reports of military brass destruction could be bad news for reloaders and shooters,” this act would have driven some ammunition suppliers out of business and driven up the cost of all ammunition.  It would also have burdened taxpayers, because of expenses associated with the “demilitarization” of the cartridges and the reduced value of the mutilated brass on the American market.  (See the post under the Category: “Ammunition.”) 

UPDATE: Following a well done expression of displeasure from Senators from Montana, an Obama DOD supervisor has fallen on his sword (taken the blame) for this blunder.  The policy has been rescinded.  We will probably never know if this was a trial balloon floated by the administration to make sure that we were awake, or if it was the brainchild of a mid-level bureaucrat out to get brownie points.

A Fort Campbell, Kentucky soldier has reported that he has been ordered to give the U.S. Army information on all his privately owned firearms and concealed carry permits.  See my last post, “Soldier reports Army wants to register his private firearms.”  (Category: “Culture War.”)  Is this an isolated incident or a symptom of a larger problem?

Front Door Attack: 

Former Black Panther Bobby Rush, (D) Illinois, has introduced HR 45.  This is a draconian bill that registers owners of handguns and semi-autos and effectively  kills hunting and the shooting sports by denying possession of any firearm to persons under the age of 18.  This bill may allow the BATFE to inspect your private home to be sure that your guns are “safely” stored.  This bill has reportedly picked up a co-sponsor.  

While conventional wisdom says that HR 45 is too extreme to go anywhere, it could be the starting point that leads to additional infringements of our Second Amendment rights.  In any case, we have to keep a close eye on this beast and try to smother it, before it gets out of hand.  (See my posts on HR 45 under the Category: “Registration.”)

Latest Back Door Attack: 

The Washington Times reported in an editorial on 03-17-09 that the Obama Administration is trying to kill the federal firearms program that allows specially trained pilots of commercial aircraft to carry handguns on flights.  This program, which is designed to allow pilots to mount a last ditch defense of their planes in the event of a hijacking, has had “administrative” problems with less than one percent of the pilots involved.

Now, the Obama Administration has apparently slowed the approval process under the program and diverted two million dollars from the training budget to the employment of more “supervisory staff.”  This is all the more incomprehensible, because, as the article reports, around 70% of commercial pilots have a military background, and hence some familiarity with firearms.

If you own a gun and voted for Obama/Biden, do something not dangerously painful to your body, take at least one class on logical thinking and problem solving, and vow never to make that mistake again.  For everyone who loves freedom and supports the rights of American Citizens to armed self-defense against crime, tyranny, and genocide, contact your elected representatives and let them know that you are “bitter,” “clingy,” and, as the NRA so aptly recommends, that you “Vote Freedom First!”

Last night, 60 Minutes ran a rant against U.S. gun smuggling into Mexico.  The problem is that some of the guns shown on the program were not firearms that are legally, commercially available in the United States.  It is these legally available guns that Eric Holder and the Obama Administration want to ban.

Can you say, “Bait and switch, Amigo?”  Common, legal semi-automatic firearms are apparently being misclassified as fully automatic military weapons.  In a conversation with Steven Schreiner, President of the Firearms Coalition of Colorado, I learned that the guns shown in the 60 Minute segment included an M-60 machine gun, which is legal in the U.S. only if you have a Class III Firearms License and pay a $200 transfer tax.  These machine guns are extremely rare and expensive in the U.S., and therefore unlikely to be smuggled across the border.

Also shown were U.S. M-16 rifles with grenade launchers.  While it would be theoretically possible to re-machine these military firearms, it would be much easier and more economical for Mexican gangs to obtain them from corrupt government sources and from gun runners  in Mexico or neighboring states.  The M-16 select-fire rifle that can be used in an automatic mode is in military and terrorist use in many countries in Central and South America.  The U.S. civilian version of the M-16 is the AR 15.  It does not fire full auto and is not available with a grenade launcher that accepts anti-personnel ammunition.  The 60 Minute piece showed obsolete M-1 type hand grenades.  Live grenades are not commercially available in the U.S. legal market. 

AK 47 “assault rifles” have been displayed in previous televion exposes of guns used in Mexico, according Schreiner.  Again, possession of any full auto firearm is heavily regulated and taxed by the U.S. government.  Any grenades or actual select fire weapons likely came from Mexican or foreign sources.  The AK 47 is probably the most common modern rifle in the world, since the old Soviet Union exported them wholesale in support of “people’s” revolutions.  Soviet satellite states also produced large quantities of these guns.

Venezuelan Strong Man Hugo Chavez has imported 100,000 AK-47’s and is planning factories that produce AK-47’s and ammunition.  There is no shortage of old Soviet-bloc and even new Russian arms, if you have the money to pay for them.  The drug cartels have the money.  (gunpolicy.org is not a Second Amendment-friendly site.)

Belt-fed Russian PK or PKM machine guns have appeared on previous TV programs about Mexican gang weapons.  They are also regulated, rare, and quite expensive in the U.S.  Former Soviet allies and socialist governments in South and Central America would have extensive access to these military weapons.

Schreiner said news reports indicate that Russian hand grenades are showing up in Mexico, along with Soviet-style rocket propelled grenade (RPG) launchers.  These long, slender, shoulder-fired weapons are used by armies and terrorists around the globe.  RPG launchers and ammunition are not coming from U.S. markets.

Let us remember that Mexico has absolute, draconian gun control laws that deprive virtually everyone in the country except the ruling class of the legal ability for self-defense.  I guess the drug cartels and violent street gangs didn’t get the memo banning guns.  See my posts on Mexico under the Category: “Foreign Gun Laws.”

The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives has issued a warning to federally licensed dealers against selling guns to persons without proper documentation.  If you want to privately sell a firearm, please make sure you know to the best of your ability that the buyer is legally eligible to buy the gun.  I would recommend checking the driver’s license and asking some questions.  You might get two forms of ID.  (This is not legal advice.  Just trying to help keep a few  guns out of the hands of gangsters and terrorists.)

It’s possible that some American firearms are being smuggled south across the border.  Given the availability of military weapons from other sources, I don’t believe that the U.S. is a significant source of Mexican violence.

 Don’t fall for the “bait and switch” tactic on the part of the Obama Administration.  Between South and Central American sources, the Mexican Police, and the Mexican Military, there are plenty of guns for the gangs.  Any guns coming from the U.S. would most likely be commercially available firearms, not the military weapons shown on 60 Minutes.  Again, Mexico has gun “control,” so there must be some “mistake” about the killings, kidnappings and murders south of the border.

Trying to fight the violence generated by MS 13 and other international gangs in this country and Mexico through American gun bans is like trying to fight a fire with a can of gasoline.  It’s exciting, but it doesn’t work very well.

First of all, an “Assault Weapon” is a select-fire military gun that can fire more than one bullet with one pull of the trigger.  The guns that Clinton “banned” and Obama wants to ban are not “Assault Weapons,” they are semi-automatic or self-loading firearms that fire one round with one pull of the trigger.

To get some idea of what Obama’s ban might look like, we can review a summary of  Democrat Representative McCarthy’s bill of last year, HR 1022.  Her bill contained the following anti-individual rights provisions.  (This list is not inclusive.)

• Allows Attorney General to ban any semiauto ever used by police or military
• Presumes that gun used by military or police is not suitable for civilian “sporting purpose,” even if gun is used in sporting event-Orwellian language-really scary!

• Bans by name: AR-15, Mini 14, Uzi, M-1 Carbine, Galil, Mac 10, AK, SKS, AR-10 and others
• Bans transfers by persons of magazines of over ten rounds with semi-automatic firearms (Bans magazine transfers?)
• Grandfathers guns currently owned, but registers all future transfers of semi-autos (Sets up confiscation)
• Bans importation of magazines of over ten rounds
• Bans semi-autos with pistol grips, threaded barrels, folding stocks, bayonet lugs, and barrel shrouds
• Definition of “grip” may be used to include any semi-auto firearm in the ban
• Ban includes semi-auto shotguns with magazine wells and “Street Sweepers”
• Bans semi-auto .22s with magazine wells
• Exempts .22s with tubular magazines of over ten rounds
• Annual report by Attorney General to Congress on use of semi-autos in crime (Sets stage for further restriction)
• Dealer or manufacturer must certify to Attorney General within 60 days that any high capacity magazine sold was made before the date of the ban

Remember that registration is a necessary precursor to confiscation.  Semi-automatic firearms were confiscated in New York  after the owners were “promised” that the registration lists would never be used to take away their guns.

“Conservative” pundit Charles Krauthammer said of the Clinton semi-auto ban, “The claim of the advocates that banning these 19 types of ‘assault weapons’ will reduce the crime rate is laughable…  Passing a law like the assault weapons ban is a symbolic…move…  Its only real justification is not crime, but to desensitize the public to the regulation of weapons in preparation for their ultimate confiscation.  De-escalation begins with a change in mentality.  And that change in mentality starts with the symbolic yielding of certain types of weapons.”  (Charles Krauthammer, syndicated Columnist, The Washington Post, 1996.)

Please contact your gun owning friends and neighbors and anyone you know that loves freedom.  Ask them to call, E-mail and write their elected federal representatives and senators in opposition to this deceptive scheme.

If you are a hunter, shotgunner, small bore target shooter,  or a collector of antique firearms, don’t think that you are immune from the gun-grabbing tendencies of this administration.  The Socialists pushing this dangerous agenda are using England as a model.  (See my posts on England under the Category: “Foreign Gun Laws,” on this site.)

If you have visited this blog in the past you already know that the British Olympic Pistol Team is forced to train in Switzerland, because their guns are banned in their home country.  That is the end game envisioned by the enemies of our individual right to armed self-defense against crime, tyranny, and genocide.

“Ask not for whom the bell tolls…”  Get politically active or lose your birthright of freedom forever.

Write your legislators.  Testify at hearings.  Join pro-Second Amendment Organizations.  Join major political parties and become precinct leaders and district captains.  Campaign for electable pro-gun rights candidates.  (The next election cycle has started.  Emily’s List is already working to promote Democrat victories in the 2010 mid-term elections.  Think redistricting!  Think Gerrymandering to create “safe” Democrat districts for the next ten years!  If you don’t know what that means, be very afraid!)

Read the text of H.R. 45 and last session’s H.R. 1022 on the website for the U.S. Congress to get an idea about what we are facing with regard to handgun and semi-automatic firearms registration and a probable semi-auto ban.

Talk to your friends and neighbors about the need to protect the Bill of Rights.  (See my post: “Comments on H.R. 45 revisited,” 02-03-09, under the Category: “Legislation.”

We have to be careful in our public discourse that we do not feed into the stereotypes perpetrated by the Left against gun owners and lovers of individual liberty.  Ninty-nine percent of us are not “wing nuts, ” “whack jobs,” “men who lie to their wives about what they do on weekends.”  “We are not “Bambi killers,” “one-toothed rednecks,” “or kill-crazed militia wild men.”

Let us take the defense of our natural rights one careful step at a time.  Right now, we have about 80,000,000 gun owners in this country.  As has been pointed out, if we all stand up and make our voices heard, we can preserve our rights and our way of life.

We must also be very careful about our sources of information and our quotations.  Double check your sources!  As far as I have been able to determine, the “Liberty Teeth” quote from George Washington is bogus,  as is the quote from Hitler recently mentioned in Comments, which ends, “…and the world will follow our lead into the future.”

The “Liberty Teeth” quote from Washington is obviously questionable, because he “mentions” “prairie wagons,” which were not a means of transportation in Colonial America.  No one has been able to find the text of Hitler’s “…follow our lead speech.”  If anyone can give me a solid citation on either of these, I will change my mind, but until that happens, I will not use either one.

Again, let us fight our political battles with relentless, sober resolve and determination and avoid language that may give our equally relentless political enemies an excuse for oppression or a legitimate argument that we are making up quotations.  We do not have to fabricate research data to make our case.  We just have to get the facts out to other gun owners and a public that have been numbed by the constant nattering of a biased Mainstream Media and a well-funded international movement to disarm the American People.

A usually reliable source has reported that there is a letter circulating in the U.S. Congress seeking co-sponsors for a ban on semi-automatic firearms.  This is not surprising, given the anti-gun nature of the party in power in Washington.  The prototype for this bill will likely be Representative McCarthy’s H.R. 1022 that, in effect, bans everything with a magazine well.  Stay tuned!  Stay alert!
