The Denver Post reported on 09-16-08 that no charges would be filed against Joseph Calanchini, a Wyoming resident who was arrested for carrying cased firearms into the House Speaker’s hotel during the Democrat Convention.  (”No charges for gun carrier during Dems’ Convention,” Denver Post, 09-16-08, Page 2B.)  See my post, “Denver Weapons Arrest at Pelosi’s Hotel.  What?”  (08-25-08) Category: “Concealed Carry.”

Security personnel apparently responded negatively to Mr. Calanchini’s attempt to check in at the hotel with two rifle cases.  Two pistols were later discovered.  There was some discussion about concealed weapons charges, but those concerns have evidently been resolved.

A usually reliable source has advised me that authorities have not yet returned Mr. Calanchini’s firearms to him.  Hopefully, this issue will soon be resolved as well.

Questions about his search and arrest remain.  Does the overt possession of a legal weapon in a case in the vicinity of a high profile politician constitute probable cause for police intervention?  Would an assassin exhibit an obvious weapon container in a public place prior to an attack?  Have we as a society become so fearful of firearms that the mere implied presence of a gun provokes panic?

Were security and police personnel justified in their actions?  Will Mr. Calanchini get his guns back?  Will hoplophobia become public policy, if the Democrats win big in November?  Stay tuned.
