In a 06-27-08 news release, the Second Amendment Foundation reports that the Chicago Tribune has called for the repeal of an “anachronism,” i.e., the Second Amendment. This is an especially interesting reaction to this week’s Heller decision by the Supreme Court. Heller confirmed that the “right of the people to keep and bear arms…” means exactly what it says and has always said since the founding of the Republic.

It is deliciously ironic that a paper from what many people consider to be one of the most violence-ridden and corrupt inner cities in America should call for the repeal of the Amendment that recognizes the rights of individual citizens to protect themselves from crime and tyranny. (See the “Chicago Gang Violence” post of 04-24-08 on this site under the category “Gun Law Failures.”)

As one of the few other U.S. cities with a ban on handguns, the Democrat political machine in Chi Town is understandably concerned about the Heller decision. It will be interesting to see how much traction this proposal gets with a Democrat Party trying to woo gun owners in the national election. Even Barack H. Obama, who comes out the the Illinois machine, is unlikely to take such a radical stand.

I doubt there will be much public support for this idea this year from the Dems. Past liberal attempts to push gun control have had results similar to touching the hot rail on the Chicago El. Bzzzt!

However, if the Democrats sweep the election in November and get what they consider to be a national mandate for their hard left policies, it will be “Katy bar the door!” for the Bill of Rights. We already have the Democrat Speaker of the House endorsing the so-called “Fairness Doctrine” to silence conservative talk radio. You have to wonder what other assaults on individual freedom are brewing in the salons and latte parlors of the liberal elites.
