If gun control worked, Mexico would be Paradise
April 29, 2008 | Tagged gang warfare, Gun Law Failures, Mexican violence |
According to an AP story in the Denver Post, 13 were killed and 9 wounded in a Tijuana running gun fight over the weekend. How can that be? Mexico has gun laws of which American liberals only dream. South of the border, Mexicans enjoy gun registration, restrictive licensing, restrictions on permissible calibers of firearms, private sale bans, and government-sponsored anti gun ownership propaganda. (See http://davekopel.com/espanol/mexican-gun-laws.htm for a good summary.) (More information at http://www.panda.com/mexicoguns/)
Mexico also features epidemic gang violence, massive corruption, and bribery at many levels. The “little bite” is required to complete all kinds of routine government transactions.
Mexican officials often blame “lax” U.S. gun laws for their problems, but they can’t seem to enforce their own laws against drug trafficking, illegal gun possession, and murder. My perception of the truth is this: gun control doesn’t work, it disarms honest citizens, encourages criminals, fosters corruption, and invites tyranny. Gun control is not Mexico’s only problem, but it doesn’t seem to be reducing their crime rate.
