Chicago gang violence shows gun law failure

An AP print story in The Rocky Mountain News on page 31, April 23rd, 2008, “Chaos among gangs,” refers to 9 deaths in 36 shootings over the past weekend in Chicago. Chicago has some of the most draconian gun control laws in the country; therefore, this orgy of gang violence indicates that the homies in this “safe” city don’t obey the law. What a suprise!
The article attributes the shooting outbreak to a “breakdown” in discipline, because so many gang leaders have been locked up that the younger gang members are committing violence on their own without proper authorization from above. Think about that for a minute.
Chicago, with its myriad gun laws, is dependent on a stable gang structure to keep murders at some sort of acceptable level. It has come to the point where a major American city relies on gang leaders to maintain order. Surely Chicago does not issue “licenses” to the gangs for a set number of killings per week or month? Is the city considering releasing gang leaders from jail, so that they would be better able to control their home boys? Is this the ultimate unintended consequence of gun control?

[...] a general rule, Democrats still want to ban handguns, at least in the inner city crime centers that they perpetuate with their dependence-building social programs and draconian gun laws. [...]
you suck
Gun control will never prevent firearm offences by people who own them illegally, no law can prevent such incidents by people who are not obeying the law in the first place, but that’s not really the purpose of gun control, offences committed with legally owned firearms and offences committed with illegally owned firearms are two separate issues, the one does not affect the other.
